"With Y'all I'm Born Again" is a 1979 duet written by Carol Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 motion picture Fast Break. It was performed past Motown recording artists Baton Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited equally Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and number two on the United kingdom singles nautical chart.[3]

History [edit]

The music from Fast Suspension was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Carol Connors put words to iv of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written almost of the lyrics to 'With You I'1000 Built-in Once more' in 22 minutes, merely I couldn't discover two words and it was driving me crazy."[4] The correct words came to her on her way to an water ice cream parlor, where she requested a pencil and newspaper along with her lodge. "I had finally found it—the line I was seeking--'Come evidence me your kindness, in your artillery I know I'll find this'—and I wanted to get information technology downwardly on paper."[4]

Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright every bit Preston's partner for the two duets that had been written for the picture,[v] and each singer also had a solo number to cutting for the soundtrack album likewise. Connors recalled, "Billy and Syreeta were originally non very fond of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to do their own thing, but this worked out extremely well for both of them."[four] The reluctant pair were surprised past the success of "With You I'yard Born Once again". "Though both liked the song, they never dreamed of it beingness a hit unmarried."[vi]

Connors noted the impression some were left with past the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the vocal on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he'southward a star.'" Connors also shared, "The belatedly great Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he beginning heard the vocal on the radio and stood directly up in anaesthesia, narrowly missing getting his throat cut past the pair of scissors. True story."[4]

But radio airplay and record sales almost never happened. The Fast Interruption soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco nonetheless permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the album, the trip the light fantastic tune "Go for Information technology", was chosen every bit the single that would be issued to promote the anthology. That choice barely made a dent in the charts, spending one week on the Disco singles chart at number eighty in Billboard magazine[7] and "bubbling nether" the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week at number 108.[two]

The film did not become much attention, either, and Preston described their side by side try to give "With You I'yard Born Again" more exposure, explaining that "after the film didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] album didn't sell well. We pulled information technology off that album and put information technology on mine."[6] Preston'south album, Late at Night, came out later in 1979, but fifty-fifty with that reissue of the vocal, Preston insisted that "we still didn't think of it as a unmarried."[half dozen] It did, however, brainstorm to go airplay in the European market[6] and was finally released as a single at the end of the year.

Another hurdle the vocal had to overcome was the fact that its championship did not click with some record buyers. "Connors says her only regret almost 'With You I'm Built-in Again' is that she didn't championship information technology 'Come Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Berry Gordy called me to allow me know we had a monster striking on our hands but that early on many people were going into tape stores request for "Come Bring Me Your Softness", and some record sales were lost equally a issue.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "born over again" is often associated with Christianity may have too been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, but Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that's the fashion nosotros felt most one some other. Culp was the inspiration."[iv] The singers also felt the song could exist interpreted in a religious context as well as being a romantic love vocal. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Break, nosotros understood it was a romantic song. Only I recall of information technology equally religious because God is love, so it all inter-relates."[six] This religious aspect would afterward exist played upwards past the show Glee in the season two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played past Cory Monteith) and Rachel Berry (played by Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the song dressed as a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.

Chart success [edit]

"With You I'chiliad Born Over again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated Dec 8, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[2] The following week marked its first advent on the Uk singles chart[viii] and on Billboard'south list of the fifty most popular Adult Contemporary songs in the U.S., and both chart runs resulted in a number 2 showing.[9] [3] It besides started three weeks on the mag's Hot Soul Singles nautical chart in the January 19, 1980, upshot and got equally loftier as number 86.[10] It was Preston's biggest hit in five years and the biggest pop hit of Wright's career.
